EM Vierspänner Lähden: Anna Mareike Meier gewinnt vor Hausherr Christoph Sandmann Dressur
(Lähden) Das fing gut an für die gastgebende Nation der FEI Europameisterschaften der Vierspänner: Anna Mareike Meier (Negernbötel) und Christoph Sandmann (Lähden) auf Platz eins und zwei nach der Dressur, Anna Sandmann (Lähden) auf dem vierten Rang und Georg von Stein (Modautal) und Michael Brauchle (Aalen) auf den Plätzen sieben und acht. Das sorgte für entspannte Stimmung – immerhin hat sich Team Germany bei der EM im eigenen Land viel vorgenommen.
“War gut, oder?” Hausherr Christoph Sandmann – ohnehin nicht als Vielredner bekannt, hielt sich nicht lange mit Erklärungen auf, sondern fuhr seine Pferde Richtung Stall. Tatsächlich kam an Meier und Sandmann keiner und keine mehr vorbei in dieser ersten Teilprüfung Dressur. Michael Brauchle – immer eine “Bank” im Marathon – hatte sein Gespann für die EM etwas umgestellt, eines der Indoor-Pferde in seinen Viererzug integriert. “Der ist schnell und wendig und geht sonst hauptsächlich in den Weltcup-Qualifikationen und schnell und wendig brauche ich hier in den Hindernissen.”
Etwas zurückhaltender waren die Titelverteidiger in Mannschafts- und Einzelwertung aus den Niederlanden im Dressurviereck unterwegs. Europameister Bram Chardon fuhr auf den sechsten Platz. Ijsbrand Chardon wurde Zehnter und Koos de Ronde fuhr auf Platz 22.
Höchst zufrieden schaute Belgiens Equipechef Mark Wentein drein: Dries Degrieck, der bereits in den Weltcup-Qualifikationen 2024/2025 glänzte, hat mit Platz fünf in der Dressur in Lähden unterstrichen, das seine Ambitionen nicht nur der Hallensaison gelten, Glenn Geerts legte mit Rang zehn nach und Tom Stokmans war mit Platz 12 der dritte Belgier unter den Top-15.
Team Deutschland nach der Dressur in Führung
Das bedeutet – die deutsche EM-Equipe mit Michael Brauchle, Anna Mareike Meier und Anna Sandmann führt mit 82,64 Punkten vor dem belgischen Trio mit Tom Stokmans, Glenn Geerts und Dries Degrieck (91,43) und der “Oranje-Equipe”, bestehend aus Bram und Ijsbrand Chardon und Koos de Ronde (92,03). Tschechien, Ungarn und Schweden folgen und noch ist alles offen, denn es sind nur wenige Punkte, die die Equipen voneinander trennen.
Der Marathon-Kurs auf dem Gelände der PSG Lähden ist legendär: Immer wieder lässt sich der gastgebende Verein etwas Neues einfallen, baut um oder neu. “Das ist ein anspruchsvoller Kurs”, so das offizielle Urteil. Michael Brauchle wurde präziser: “Das ist richtig schwer!” Bedeutet auch: Konzentration und Präzision sind das Maß der Dinge. Lähdens PSG hat sich derweil für den Ansturm der Schaulustigen gerüstet. Der Marathon mit den spektakulären Hindernissen lockt regelmäßig tausende Besucher/innen an. Die bekommen bei den Europameisterschaften zwei Wasserhindernisse zu sehen: den Bockmeyer-Brunnen und den VFG-Teich. Absolut ungewöhnlich: Zwei große Bagger, deren Schaufeln sich hoch oben treffen, bilden die gemeinsame Einfahrt zu zwei Hindernissen – eines für die Weltmeisterschaft der Para-Driver und eins für die EM der Vierspänner, zugleich wird das Live-Scoring auf einer Tafel an den Baggern angezeigt. Lähden ist auch Anziehungspunkt für Fahrsportpromis: der ehemalige deutsche Top-Fahrer und Weltmeister Michael Freund unterstützt die schwedischen Fahrer und auch Boyd Exell aus Australien – der Weltklassefahrer schlechthin – ist bei der PSG Lähden zu Gast.

European Championships for Four-in-Hand Driving in Lähden: Anna Mareike Meier wins dressage ahead of host Christoph Sandmann
(Lähden/Germany) Things got off to a good start for the host nation of the FEI European Championships for Four-in-Hand Driving: Anna Mareike Meier and Christoph Sandmann took first and second place after the dressage, Anna Sandmann took fourth place, and Georg von Stein and Michael Brauchle took seventh and eighth places. This created a relaxed atmosphere for the whole team – after all, Team Germany had ambitious goals: At the last FEI European Championships in Germany in 2019, the german squad won team-gold.
“That was good, wasn’t it?” Host Christoph Sandmann, not known for his chatter, didn’t waste any time explaining, but drove his horses to the stable. In fact, no one could beat Meier and Sandmann in this first dressage test. Michael Brauchle – always a „safe bet“ in the marathon – had slightly adjusted his team for the European Championships, integrating one of the indoor horses into his four-in-hand team. „He’s fast and agile and usually competes mainly in World Cup qualifiers, and I need speed and agility here in the obstacles”.
The defending champions from the Netherlands, both in the team and individual competitions, were somewhat more reserved in the dressage arena. European Champion Bram Chardon finished sixth. Ijsbrand Chardon was tenth, and Koos de Ronde finished 22nd. But the marathon is coming on Saturday.
Belgium’s team manager Mark Wentein was extremely satisfied: Dries Degrieck, who had already shone in the 2024/2025 World Cup qualifiers, underscored with fifth place in the dressage in Lähden that his ambitions extend beyond the indoor season. Glenn Geerts followed suit with tenth place, and Tom Stokmans, with 12th place, was the third Belgian in the top 15.

This means that the German European Championship team, consisting of Michael Brauchle, Anna Mareike Meier, and Anna Sandmann, leads with 82.64 points, ahead of the Belgian trio of Tom Stokmans, Glenn Geerts, and Dries Degrieck (91.43) and the „Oranje-Equipe“ (Oranje team), consisting of Bram and Ijsbrand Chardon and Koos de Ronde (92.03). The Czech Republic, who completed good dressage tests, Hungary, and Sweden follow, and everything is still up for grabs, as only a few points separate the teams.
The marathon course on the grounds of PSG Lähden is legendary: The host club is constantly coming up with new ideas, remodeling, or building a new course what makes it interesting for course designer Jeroen Houterman (NED) to work with the hosts.
„It’s a demanding course,“ was the official verdict. Michael Brauchle was more specific: „It’s really difficult!“ This also means that concentration and precision are the order of the day. Meanwhile, Lähden’s PSG is preparing for the onslaught of spectators. The marathon with its spectacular obstacles regularly attracts thousands of visitors. They will see two water obstacles at the European Championships: the Bockmeyer Fountain and the VFG Pond. Absolutely unusual: Two large excavators, whose buckets meet high above, form the common entrance to two obstacles – one for the Para-Driver World Championship and one for the European Four-in-Hand Championships, while live scoring will be displayed on a board on the excavators. Lähden is also a magnet for driving celebrities: former top German driver and world champion Michael Freund will support the Swedish drivers, and Boyd Exell from Australia – the world-class driver par excellence – will also be a guest at PSG Lähden and support his clients.
